Host Interview: Sinful Signings

Hello, everyone! Welcome back to Friday Night Writes! As always, our goal is to shine a spotlight on members of the book community and introduce readers to awesome authors, narrators, event hosts, influencers, and more.

This week, we'd like to introduce our featured guests, Autumn and Desie, the Event Coordinators of Sinful Signings! Evie will be leading the interview.

Sinful Signings
Sinful Signings

I know you're both busy getting ready for Sinful next month, so thank you for taking time to talk to us. Let's start off with the big question, what is Sinful Signings?

Sinful Signings is a book convention that focuses on indie authors. We strive to provide a safe space for readers and authors to enjoy books and community.

I have attended a few times, and absolutely love it. But for someone who hasn't gone to Sinful before, what makes your event different from others?

Shenanigans. All the Shenanigans, lol. We like books and we like each other, and we like to have fun. We are a two day event with author meet and greets, panels, book signing, and a themed ball. We prioritize the comfort and safety of our people. We dont like to be crowded or hot or rushed so we do purchase best to create an environment that reflects that.

We usually have between 70-80 authors, narrators, and vendors in attendance, as well as our famous and invaluable Sinfluencers. We're open to all genres, but with that said, we are and 18+ event. We might be heavy on the romance, but we have plenty of fantasy, horror, and suspense/thriller to make everyone happy.

Sinful Signings is a very inclusive and safe space. It was one of the many reasons I feel that Sinful is Home. I know I'm not the only other author that feels that way. But, what is your favorite part of hosting a book event?

Our favorite thing about hosting Sinful is our people. We love our people so much and we've gotten to see them grow their craft and It's so amazing. We are infinitely proud of our people.

I know I can't speak for everyone, but I'm proud of you two. You've done a brilliant job. You have people fighting to get in. What made you decide to host an event in the first place?

The honest answer is that indies shouldn't have to fight and beg to get into events. That was what we were seeing and what we were experiencing as authors. Very few of the most sought after events are overly open to indie authors, especially smaller or newer authors. Everyone deserves a chance at success. Everyone deserves the opportunity to be seen. We do our best to have a good balance of authors of every level and experience and that's one of the best things about the community we have built at Sinful.

Now, is this something you'd like to do full-time?

I think that's what we're already doing, lol. This is our third Full-time job, lol.

Oof, I know how that goes, but we appreciate that you keep showing up for us! What do you like to do outside of your three-full time jobs?

Desie- If I don’t HAVE to do something, then I will happily do nothing. My life is very chaotic so when I have the opportunity to rest, I take it. So I guess my hobbies are rotting on the couch and napping lol.

Autumn- Outside of books, I love music and gardening when I have time… even though I'm bad at it, lol.

We all have our hobbies. I too like doing nothing lol. But we are also passionate people, who stand up for what we believe. Are there any causes/projects/ charities that you support?

Autumn I am very active in the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and disabled community. I am very passionate about disability rights and pushing people to understand that accessibility isn't the same thing as inclusivity. https://www.parentprojectmd.org/ I am also actively advocates for and supports the Romani people. https://www.rromacouncil.org/rroma-council

Desie: I am extremely passionate about indigenous rights. Having a daughter has escalated my awareness of MMIW and all that it encompasses. I hope to aid in the creation of a better world for her.

You are both incredible women. I hope through your advocacy that real positive change happens.

I'm sure we can talk for hours on these subjects, and I would like to later, but let us get back to the questions; how long have you been hosting events?

Autumn has been hosting events of various types (mostly comicons) and sizes for over a decade.

When you're looking at author's submissions, are there certain genres you're looking for?

We are open to any genre, but we are an 18+ event.

This isn't the first time you've mentioned this event was 18+. Considering a lot of your authors are spicy romance authors, I can understand why. How do you decide which authors to accept each year? Is there any criteria that is an automatic yes/no?

We have one rule and as long as you're following that rule, you're good. If we've got room and you follow the rule, you'll get a table.

What is your favorite part of being an event host? Your least favorite part?

We enjoy our people the most. And we enjoy stress the least.

Well, we love you the most! Now, you're both authors; how has that helped with hosting a book event?

It has made picking questions for interviews easier.

I guess that's true, you know what authors are looking for. When you're prepping for an event, interview, marketing, or anything else, is there a routine you follow?

No. Oh gosh. No. It's straight AAAAHHHHH!!! over here, but its fine, lol.

Do you prefer to host Indies, Trad published authors? Both?

We're open to anyone as long as they follow the rule.

Real quick, I know we're supposed to be talking about Sinful Signings, but I have to ask about your own author journeys. How many books do you have published?

Desie- I have one, Whiskey and Weights.

Whiskey and Weights
Whiskey and Weights

Autumn- My pen name has eight books published currently. The Tangled Web Duet, The Alpha Trilogy, and The Beta Trilogy

All amazing books! But we know an author never stops writing, how WIPS (Works in progress) do you have right now that you'd be willing to share with us?

Desie- I have about seven.

Autumn- My pen name declines to answer 😬

Thank you for sharing. Let's get back to Sinful Signings. What inspired you to put together Sinful?

We are heavily inspired by fairness. And spite.

Through Spite, all things are possible, this is true. Was there a person or persons that inspired you?

Each other. Absolutely each other. And our authors. Always our authors.

I love how close you two are. You're definitely besties. But tell me, was there ever a particularly awesome moment at one of the events that has stood out to you?

Every single time one of our authors or narrators see themselves the way we see them is the most magical and amazing thing in the entire universe.

I'm sure you've answered this question before during an author interview, but in your opinion, what is the best part of the book community? The worst?

The most- the people.

The least- some of the people.

I think a lot of us feel that way. What is the best part about hosting a book event?

Y'all are going to get tired of this answer, but the best part about this is our people.

If you could have a bigger budget, what would you like to see at the next event?

We Would book a private showing with the Paranormal Cirque. Our people would love that so much. But dang if it isn't expensive.

What do you do to recharge your mental health and creativity?

Try our best and hydrate.

I think that's what we're all doing. Ok, our last serious question; Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about putting together their own book event?

Research yourself into an anxiety attack, then take a nap and come back to

organize everything. Make lists and follow them. Get comfortable with spreadsheets and calendars.

Alright, We're about done, so it's time for the fun questions!

What was your most recent five-star read?

Desie- Finding Home by Tonya Ink.

What is your favorite dinosaur?

Desie- Pterodactyl

Do you collect anything besides books?

Autumn- I collect stress and catastrophes.

Do you believe in Aliens? Ghosts?

Desie- Obviously yes.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Desie- Mint chocolate chip.

If you could be a shifter, what would your alternate form be?

Autumn- Something that flies.

As a child, what did you think would be awesome about being an adult but isn’t as awesome as you thought it would be? Why?

Desie- Honestly? Being an adult.

OK, that's all the questions we had. Would you mind telling everyone where they can find you?

When are your next events?
